Germantown has a weird relationship with the cheesesteak. We’re not Philadelphia, but we’re close enough to know better, so when the craving hits, it hits with the force of a MARC train at rush hour.

Somewhere between the traffic circle and that one Wegmans parking lot you always avoid, there’s a full spectrum of steak options: from the gloriously sloppy, two-meal-sized halal behemoth at Naz's that makes you question every $15 sandwich you've ever bought, to, well, a cold sub with plastic cheese that tasted like a crime scene. I've done the legwork, endured the letdowns, and mapped out where to get a real deal steak, a flawless lassi on the side, and everything in between.

Scroll on for the full rundown, ranked from places worth planning your day around to one I'd rather forget.

Highlights
Generous portions, multiple meals
Tender, well-seasoned meats
Unbeatable value at $10.99
Plenty of sauce, no extra charge
Worth the dollar fry add-on

I'll be honest, I walked up to Naz's Halal Food with a plan to try one cheesesteak and call it a day. That plan died quickly. The thing is massive, a glorious pile of tender, well-seasoned meat that spills out of the roll like it's trying to escape. At $10.99, I got two meals out of it, maybe three if I'd shown some restraint. The sauce situation is generous, no nickel-and-diming here. I added the fries for a dollar, which was the smartest financial decision I made all week. This is the kind of value that makes you question every other lunch you've ever bought.

Highlights
Mango lassi top tier
Kind staff working
Chicken momo good size

Curry Z isn't really a cheesesteak joint, but I wandered in anyway because the mango lassi called to me from across the parking lot. It's top tier, creamy and sweet, the kind of drink that makes you momentarily forget what you came for. The staff are genuinely kind, which goes a long way when you're ordering something a little off-menu. I grabbed the chicken momo too, good size, perfectly steamed, and they made me think maybe I didn't need a cheesesteak after all. But I did need one, so I'll be back with a plan. Just know the real stars here are the sides and the smiles.

Best cheesesteak in Maryland
Ribeye beef, never greasy
Superb service, spotless shop
Tots fried to perfection
Worth the wait, every time

Cheesesteak & Co. in Elkridge is the real deal, and I say that with the grudging respect of someone who drives past three other steak joints to get here. The ribeye is never greasy, just rich and beefy, melted into the roll like it was always meant to be there. The service is superb, and the shop is spotless, which is more than I can say for my own kitchen. The tots are fried to a ridiculous perfection, crispy little golden nuggets of joy. Yes, you'll wait. Worth it every single time. This is the best cheesesteak in Maryland, and I'll fight anyone who disagrees.

Highlights
Cold sub with no fries
Plastic cheese, flavorless meat
Missing drink and fries
Not worth the visit

Pardon My Cheesesteak? Pardon me, but no. I ordered a cheesesteak and got a cold sub with plastic cheese that tasted like it had been sitting under a heat lamp since the Bush administration. The meat had all the flavor of wet cardboard. My drink and fries never showed up, which was maybe the universe doing me a favor. I tried to be polite, but the whole experience felt like a prank. It's not worth the visit, not even for the novelty of being disappointed. I'd rather eat a gas station hot dog. At least that comes with a side of honesty.

Best food in Germantown
Fresh pretzels and fried chicken
Open only three days
Stalls galore, spotless floors
Cheesecake by the slice

Lancaster County Dutch Market is the best food in Germantown, and I'll die on that hill. The trick is they're only open three days a week, so you have to plan your life around them, which I do, happily. The fresh pretzels are soft and salty, and the fried chicken is so good it should be illegal. The stalls are endless, the floors spotless, and the cheesecake by the slice is a dangerous temptation I rarely resist. It's not a cheesesteak place, but who cares? When you find perfection, you don't quibble about the menu. Just go early, bring cash, and wear stretchy pants.

Great for sharing dishes
Fresh flowers, warm vibe

Sabai Sabai Simply Thai is where I go when I need a break from cheesesteaks and a dose of actual vegetables. The portions are huge, and the staff are so friendly you'll feel like a regular by your second visit. The spice levels are for brave souls, so order accordingly. It's great for sharing dishes, which is good because you'll need backup. There are fresh flowers on the tables and a warm vibe that makes you want to linger. They don't do a cheesesteak, but they do a basil chicken that makes me forget that fact. Almost.

Highlights
Solidly mid-tier fast food
Fries in cute holster boxes
Toppings bar with amazing pickles
Clean store, easy parking
Good chicken and fries

Roy Rogers is solidly mid-tier fast food, and I mean that as a compliment. It's not trying to be a gourmet steak experience, and that's fine. The fries come in little holster boxes, which is the cutest thing fast food has ever done. The toppings bar has amazing pickles, the kind that snap and make your mouth pucker in the best way. The store is clean, parking is easy, and the chicken and fries are reliably good. It's the dependable friend who shows up on time and never lets you down. Not a cheesesteak contender, but a welcome stop when you're tired of chasing perfection.

Scratch-made corned beef hash
Warm, welcoming mom-and-pop vibe
Homemade sourdough and pastries
Owner’s pride shines through
Worth the strip-mall hunt

Gardenia's Cafe is a strip-mall hunt, and I almost drove past it twice. Once you find it, you'll forgive the journey. The scratch-made corned beef hash is the kind of thing that makes you wonder why anyone eats cereal for breakfast. It's warm, welcoming, and has that mom-and-pop vibe where the owner's pride shines through every plate. The homemade sourdough is chewy and tangy, and the pastries are worth the extra calories. It's not a cheesesteak spot, but it's the kind of place that makes you feel like you've discovered something special. Just don't blink or you'll miss the entrance.

Highlights
Oversized, satisfying cheesesteaks
Great local beer selection
Top-notch, friendly service
Family-friendly, game-day spot
Vegetarian subs done right

Brew Belly is where I go when I want a cheesesteak that could double as a blanket. The sandwiches are oversized, satisfying, and make your arms feel weak just holding them. The local beer selection is great, and the service is top-notch and friendly. It's a family-friendly, game-day spot, but I've also had a quiet lunch here while a kid screamed at a soccer game on the TV. The vegetarian subs are done right, which is rare, and I respect that. It's not the most refined cheesesteak in Germantown, but it's the one I crave when I'm hungry and patient.

Highlights
Friendly, quick service
Relaxing neighborhood atmosphere
Tasty Alfredo with chicken
Pierogies worth ordering
Full bar available

Outta the Way Cafe is aptly named because it's a little off the beaten path, but the detour is worth it. The service is friendly and quick, and the neighborhood atmosphere is relaxing enough to make you forget your to-do list. I tried the Alfredo with chicken, which is tasty, but the pierogies are the real reason to come. They're soft, buttery, and worth ordering every single time. There's a full bar if you need a drink to go with your carbs. Not a cheesesteak destination, but a lovely place to hide out and eat your feelings. Just don't tell anyone I said that.

Consistent quality and taste

Great spot for casual dining

Mr. K's Cafe is my go-to for consistency. The pho and Chinese favorites are always reliable, and that's a beautiful thing in a world of culinary surprises. The staff are welcoming, and my takeout orders are always ready on time, which is more than I can say for some places I've been. Portions are generous, prices are fair, and the vibe is casually comfortable. It's not a cheesesteak joint, but when I want a warm bowl of noodles on a cold day, this is where I land. It's the dependable, no-drama choice that never lets me down.

Highlights
Friendly staff, quick fixes
General Tso Cauliflower rocks
Truffle fries steal the show
Pricey, but pretty tasty

Burtons Grill & Bar is a bit pricey, but they make up for it with general Tso cauliflower that rocks your world. I came for a steak, but I stayed for the truffle fries, which absolutely steal the show. The staff are friendly and quick to fix any hiccups, which I appreciate because I've seen hiccups. It's not the cheapest lunch in Germantown, but it's pretty tasty. If you can ignore the dent in your wallet, you'll leave happy. Just don't order the cheesesteak and compare it to the others. This place is a different animal, and it knows it.
